Ranking at #4 in the Top 12 Stories of 2012, as published by Offshore Only (read the full article here,) Tomlinson’s recent record–setting 270–mile boating trip with Hayim continues to shake the boating world.
What happened: In nearly perfect early-August conditions, retired offshore racer Hayim teamed up with current offshore racer Tomlinson in a 42-foot MTI catamaran with twin Mercury 1,350-hp engines to shatter the existing 270-mile round-trip record time by almost an hour.
Why it matters: In a year that saw dwindling offshore racing fleets, the loss of the sport’s best-known raceboat and diminishing fan interest, Hayim and Tomlinson sparked interest in the foundation of the sport—running hard offshore. They also reportedly raised $65,000 for cancer research.
Johnny Tomlinson is a veteran throttleman with numerous World Titles and speed records whose professional career of boat rigging and boat racing has given him the opportunity to throttle the Worlds’ fastest boats.
